The College began as the concept of one man. Heinrich Stern was German by birth with a keen interest in medical education. His perspective on medical practices was profoundly influenced during a visit to England in 1913 where he became familiar with the work of the Royal College of Physicians in London. He returned to the United States determined to establish a similar society. On 8 January 1915, the American Congress of Internal Medicine was incorporated.

ACP has chapters in Brazil, Canada, Central America, Chile, Japan, Mexico and Venezuela and a diverse international membership across the globe. As a member of the International Society of Internal Medicine, ACP cooperates with other organizations and internal medicine societies worldwide on a variety of programs.
